Mulderbosch, 'Faithful Hound'
South African Cabernet That Drinks Beyond Its Price
— LIMITED QUANTITIES—
($22.00 per bottle / $224.40 per case) A colleague of ours recently returned from a Vermont hunting trip and brought back some fresh venison steaks. Seasoned with thyme, rosemary, salt and pepper, we wanted to pair this tasty meal with a wine that was not too overpowering but full bodied and nuanced enough to accompany the flavorful qualities of the meat. We chose the 2003 Mulderbosch Faithful Hound; it was a perfect match and drinks well beyond its price point.
The Faithful Hound is a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a touch of Shiraz from Stellenbosch, South Africa. Just near Cape Town, Stellenbosch vineyards are granite-based soils fringed by mountainous terrain.
Although South Africa is often characterized as a 'New World' region, the wines it produces are often nicely poised between New World and Old World styles. The Faithful Hound is Old World in its depth and character, but New World in its rich fruit characteristics. It displays a mixture of concentrated black currant, dark berry and nutmeg notes. Hints of coffee and spice give way to voluptuous flavors of ripe plum and intense blackberry. Subtle wood vanillin and firm yet silky smooth tannins give the wine lovely complexity.
This wine was not only delicious with venison, but also marries wonderfully with game birds, roast beef, lamb, steak, meat stews and strong cheese. Order Here
