TIR NA N'OG
An Australian Wine Fit For A Giant Victory
— LIMITED AVAILABILITY —
($28.75 per bottle / $293.25 per case) What a victory! Football fan or not, you couldn't help but be drawn into the drama of this year's Super Bowl. For the big game, we continued our tradition of hosting a barbecue and picked some tasty wines.
The MVP and guest favorite during our Super Bowl party was the 2005 Tir Na N'og pronounced (Tier nah Nohg). This is only the third vintage for this Aussie superstar and it contains some of the most treasured old vine Grenache in South Australia. Its youthful character and wonderful flavors are courtesy of low yields. Tir na N'og is one of those rare Australian wines that is consistent year after year and gets a great deal of press: Wine Spectator, Robert Parker and IWC each awarded the 2005 Tir Na N'og 91 points.
The nose is a mix of spicy red and dark berry aromas with currant fruit. Strawberry and raspberry flavors boast impressive energy and clarity, possessing very good structure and juicy acidity. Ripe, sweet, and full-bodied to the point of opulence, it has a velvety texture, layers of flavor and finishes with a peppery spice note and a hint of chocolate on a silky frame. Delicious and drinking beautifully already, this old vine Grenache is clearly built to age for another 10 years.
The drama and excitement of the Super Bowl may have aged me a bit, but Tir na N'og is Gaelic for "Land of the Youth." Legends and myths tell of a place where time was suspended and everyone was young and beautiful. Now I cannot make promises, but I can tell you that I am keeping a few extra cases for myself just in case. Pair with cheese, grilled meats of any kind or spicy dishes. Enjoy! Order Here.
