CIACCI PICCOLOMINI

Brunello di Montalcino

Tuscany, Italy

Varietals:
100% Sangiovese

- 91 pts Stephen Tanzer -

Tasting Notes:

Rich, fruity, fairly deep aromas of raspberry, orange zest, tea and tomato paste, with a touch of mushroom, leather and tobacco at the back. Very soft and extremely suave on entry, but with a pleasant peppery bite adding complexity to the ripe red cherry, raspberry and coffee flavors. A lovely, lighter-styled but impeccably balanced Brunello. Mild tannins provide a long, lasting finish. A great value and a wine to be enjoyed in its youth and over the next few years. Enjoy!

Ciacci Piccolomini, Brunello
Great Winemaker = Great Wines In Any Vintage

— LIMITED QUANTITIES

($38.00 per bottle / $387.60 per case) What a value! The expression "Great winemakers make great wines in any vintage" has never been more true than with the 2002 Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello di Montalcino. Most winemakers did not even make a 2002 Brunello because Mother Nature plagued Tuscany with rain throughout the summer forcing them to declassify their Brunellos into Rosso di Montalcino.
However, Ciacci Piccolomini, who is one of Italy's most sought after producers, made one of the best - if not the best - Brunellos in 2002. His vineyards within Montalcino (Castelnuovo dell'Abate) received 30% less rain than the neighboring areas. Not to mention, the winery was incredibly discerning during harvesting because of the weather and was extremely selective yielding almost half as much wine as the prior year. In any other vintage, Ciacci's Brunellos would be twice the price of this vintage. But because of the vintage perception, prices have come down considerably making this wine a great buying opportunity. The bouquet is intense, fruit forward and spicy with hints of red currents, raspberries and cherries as well as a big, sweet nose of tar, truffles, tobacco and leather.
While Ciacci's 2002 Brunello di Montalcino is lighter than previous vintages, it is every bit a Brunello and more. Despite its full body and nuanced flavors it is more accessible in its youth making it a perfect match for the upcoming August/September weather where warm summer days are offset by cooler nights. And because of its lighter style, you are not going to cellar this wine for 20 years. Instead, you should enjoy it now and over the next few years with everything from cheese on your patio while watching the sunset to a beautiful Porterhouse steak. A great wine surpassing all expectations after the difficult vintage. Enjoy! Order Here.
