We were waiting to feature an Australian Shiraz until we found one that really stood out. And here it is, the Schulz Winery. Fewer than 350 cases of this Aussie red were imported into the United States. Surprisingly, this little known winery is the source of fruit for the incredibly famous Torbreck Winery and both share the same famous winemaker, David Powell, who Robert Parker said is "unquestionably one of the world's finest wine producers." Not only is the value in the pedigree of this wine, but 15% of the grapes in this blend comes from the famous Run-Rig Vineyard. (As a reference point, Torbreck's Run-Rig received 99 pts last vintage from Parker and 96 pts or better in each of the three proceeding vintages. Those wines are valued at approximately $215.00 per bottle.)
    Schulz Benjamin has a classic Shiraz nose of deep blueberry, blackberry and raspberry. On the palate it is full bodied and weighty with an opulent, voluptuous elegance. It displays superb fruit balance with great acidity on the finish. As the wine opens, it reveals flavors of toffee and mocha. Do not expect overpowering tannins in this wine because they don't exist. Instead, the wine has a plush mouthfeel of plum and dark cherry and soft silky tannins.
