Domaine La Barroche
Chateauneuf-du-Pape,
Rhone, France
93 - 95 pts Stephen Tanzer
[650 cases made]
Varietals:
60% Grenache,
23% Mourvedre, 9% Cinsault, 8% Syrah
Tasting Notes:
Deep red color. Powerful, assertive and pure on the nose with a stunning bouquet of blackberry, cassis, kirsch, and mocha. Vibrant and energetic in the mouth with sweet red and dark berry, dark rose pedals accented by notes of licorice. This has an elegant, almost silky texture and finishes on a strong note of creme de mure. The tannins are present but smooth with a lasting finish. Enjoy with lamb and meats of any kind. Drink now or set down for easily a decade.

Domaine La Barroche Reserve
A C-D-P To Please Your Palate And Your Wallet
— LIMITED QUANTITIES —
($36.75 per bottle / $441.00 per case) Yesterday football season officially started and we hosted our annual NY Giants' barbecue. We roasted a leg of lamb with grilled vegetables and of course, no game would be complete without burgers and hot dogs. As the primary wine of the evening, we selected the 2004 Domaine La Barroche out of Chateauneuf-du- Pape, Rhone. Except for the Giants losing opening day, the night was a food and wine triumph. This Rhone delicacy satisfied the palates of everyone present from wine connoisseurs to casual drinkers.
When we first tasted this wine two months ago, we could not believe its quality; when we heard the price, we nearly fell out of our chairs. This wine has the body and character of such Chateauneuf notables as Domaine de Beaucastel and Clos de Papes but at a fraction of the price. What was particularly evident in the 2004 Domaine La Barroche was the quality of its Grenache grapes which are over 100 years old. It is beyond cliche to describe wines that are 'true expressions of their terroir,' but in this case, the cliche comes to life and I am forced to reiterate that this wine captures the essence of Chateauneuf. Aromas of blackberry, cassis and mocha leap from the glass. On the palate, the wine is vibrant and full bodied with sweet red and dark berry flavors accented by notes of licorice and rose pastille. Silky sweet tannins compliment the finish making it a terrific food pairing wine. Grenache and Syrah fans are sure to enjoy this small production Rhone red with balance and body.
We watched the Giants to the bitter end caring less about the outcome of the game and more about getting second and third helpings of the food and wine, transporting us, at least during that evening, to the sun dappled slopes in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Enjoy! Order Here.
