The 2023 Composition Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley was a Merchant's Pick

"This is a beautiful bottle of wine."

April 27, 2026

Savvy collectors are quietly building positions in what may be the most intriguing Pinot story of the decade.

Grab yours while you can - this wine is extremely limited!

For years, Bertrand de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti has been quietly producing "Composition," a domestic Pinot Noir made exclusively for Michelin Star restaurants. Pretty soon, this Willamette Valley Pinot will be unavailable.

This is the moment between discovered and unobtainable.

Repeat, grab yours while you can!

Burgundian in style, Composition showcases dark cherry and freshly-picked strawberry on entry.  Hints of date and fig run through the palate.  The wine is framed with terrific dusty and textured tannins.  An earthy, woodsy, even meaty finish is followed by pink pepper and dried spice, which balances the fruit. The finish is endless and the acidity refreshes the palate. A few minutes in the glass and the wine evolves to a super-velvety, silky Pinot.

Why It's Behaving Like A Collectible Burgundy

Like good red Burgundies, Composition's price increases with every vintage. Early adopters who secured the first releases are already seeing appreciation.

  • The Terroir Parallel: Pommard clones sourced from Winter's Hill Vineyard adjacent to Domaine Serene. The breezy cool nights mirror summers in Vosne-Romanée, Burgundy—creating that signature tension and complexity.
  • The Allocation Reality: Originally reserved for Michelin Star restaurants only, limited bottles are now available to collectors. Once this allocation is gone, the next vintage may not come at all.

A few minutes in the glass and the wine evolves to a super-velvety, silky Pinot.

Like good red Burgundies, Composition is a food wine—think salmon, lean meats, and roasted chicken.

This is Oregon's best-kept secret.

Extremely limited quantities.

Enjoy!

Domestic Pinot Noir Behaves Like A Collectible Burgundy - And For Good Reason!

“This is a beautiful bottle of wine.”

Decanter

This terroir-focused Willamette Valley label is a project of DRC’s Bertrand de Villaine and Katrina Rank, who identified the vineyard sources for Composition. The wines are made by Thomas Savre. Elegance and freshness abound in this Pinot Noir from a dry-farmed vineyard that is treated biodynamically. Completely destemmed fruit is fermented in concrete. Gorgeous red fruits, candied raspberries, sweet cut strawberries, and savoury elements of mint and pine bough add a splendid complexity. The palate shows bright red berries, blood orange and chopped mint. There’s plenty of structure and the tannin here alludes to a serious degree of ageability; this is a beautiful bottle of wine.

“Impossible to ignore.”

Vinous

"The 2023 Pinot Noir Chehalem Mountains is impossible to ignore as a blend of dried violets, sage, gravel dust and black cherries forms its compelling bouquet. It is texturally deep and nearly glycerol in feel, offering cooling acidity and supple wild berry fruits while a saturation of tactile minerals adds form toward the close. The finish shows notable length and concentration, leaving a coating of fine-grained tannins and a pleasantly bitter blackberry tinge. Beautifully balanced."
