Clio is by far our most sought after Spanish wine. Allocated each year by the importer, there is never enough to satisfy demand.
Even if you are not familiar with Clio but enjoy delicious, full-bodied reds, then this is your lucky day! Alma de Luzon is a Clio clone that will convert even the most discerning Clio palates.
The wine is exceptional and similar to Clio in almost every aspect: Alma de Luzon comes from the same region (Jumilla, Spain), contains the same main varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon and Monastrell), both have the same smooth, rich finish and both would fetch over $100 per bottle if they were from Napa Valley.
Like Clio, Numanthia and Alto Moncayo, the wine effectively integrates rich fruit and lush vanilla creme but in a balanced manner. Add to that, broad, deep and remarkably dark fruit with hints of scorched earth and roasted oak accents. Intense mineral notes and firm tannins add structure and precision, a byproduct of the 80 year "Old Vine Monastrell."
Alma de Luzon gives Clio a serious run for its money. Dare we say, the Cabernet in this wine gives it an edge over Clio by a small margin and therefore, Luzon is a high quality red not to be missed.
Enjoy with rich chicken dishes, cure or grilled meats of any kind and creamy to semi-hard cheeses. Allow 15-30 minutes to decant if you have the opportunity. Enjoy now and over the next 5 years.Read More »
