Better than fireworks, this highly acclaimed Amarone boasts an explosive bouquet followed by an everlasting cascade of flavors! A rare library release, it was awarded Red Wine Of The Year in 2014 by Gambero Rosso, Italy's most recognized wine publication.
The "Calcarole" cru, made in only the very best vintages, is a steeply terraced, rocky hillside vineyard with perfect southern exposure. There, the grapes thrive among the rigorous terrain. Machines are unable to harvest this landscape; all fruit must be handpicked with only the very best grapes selected for vinification. The entry has deep blackberry with cherry accents. The bouquet reveals dark cherry, tobacco, and spice; on the palate this intoxicating wine is lush with cherry fruit that works in conjunction with the sweet balanced tannins. Notes of cedar and pepper appear on the long, long finish. Amarone is a process where the grapes of the Valpolicella region are dried like raisins prior to fermentation. These concentrated berries make a rich and wonderfully expressive Italian red that is like no other.
You can certainly wait for the cooler months to crack this beauty open; however, I'm inclined to enjoy it this summer with truffle based pastas, dry rubbed ribs, grilled steak or lamb, and of course, big cheeses.
