THE REVIEW

In the tiny, gravelly village of By in the Medoc region of Bordeaux sits a chateau aptly named Chateau Rollan de By, which until recently was only enjoyed by a small circle in the wine community.
For so many years, the chateau's secrecy was part of its charms - until now! Making this year's Wine Spectator Top 100 list, Rollan de By is still every bit the value, but simply no longer the best kept secret.
Bordeaux is still one of the finest wine producing regions, however, you have to be selective. With no end to the ever increasing Bordeaux price hikes in sight, it's a pleasure to see a stellar sub-$50 Bordeaux. What makes Chateau Rollan de By such a standout is its approachability in its youth and price to quality ratio.
Of course, collectible Bordeaux such as Chateau Margaux, Lafite and Ducru-Beaucaillou are all fantastic wines, however, they are considerably more money requiring decades of cellaring.
For an everyday Bordeaux that is ready to enjoy now or lay down for five more years, look no further than Chateau Rollan de By. The wine is a traditional blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and displays notes of sweet cigar tobacco interwoven with cedar, black currant, white chocolate, and a hint of new saddle leather. It has just the right amount of structure to stand up to hearty meat dishes and smooth enough to enjoy with simple pleasures like cheese. Enjoy! Read More »
