The "Vintage Of A Lifetime" tagline was written by James Suckling in December 2014. At the time, everyone was raving about 2010 Brunello di Montalcino - for good reason.
Fast forward twelve years, and that vintage is still regarded as one of the best in decades - and that says a lot when compared to 1997, 2015, and 2016.
We recently tasted the 2010 - and the "Vintage Of A Lifetime" description is still apropos.
Valdicava is one of the benchmark producers alongside heavy hitters Soldera and Biondi Santi. This 2010 is an icon within this historic vintage.
"Absolutely stunning aromas of nectarine, orange peel, sweet black cherry, plums and flowers. Licorice and mushroom. It's full body, with layers of ultra-fine tannins and hints of tangy acidity. Such beautiful length and beauty to this wine. It's powerful and structured yet shows a gorgeous finesse and length. Truly wondrous. So long and refined. The texture is phenomenal." J. Suckling
There May Be Other Great Vintages, But....
There may be excellent Tuscan vintages in the future, but it will be a challenge to top the near perfection of this Valdicava... especially with 12 years bottle age!
Allow your 2015 and 2016's to cellar a bit longer and begin enjoying this stunning 2010 - which, by the way, still has the ability to age for another ten or more years.
If Valdicava isn't already sitting in your cellar, it should be. The bottle age is starting to reveal dusty dried spices, tilled soil, deep red black and red fruit notes, orange peel, a hint of balsamic, and silky plum notes on a finish that seems endless.
We even have this beauty in Magnums (1.5L) here:
If you were fortunate enough to secure any of the prized 2010 vintage when we featured it years ago, here is your chance to add to your collection - or start one.
Enjoy!
