A Merchant's Pick

Featured October 13, 2013

It's no surprise that our "Portuguese Pick Of The Year" is a red wine that also happens to be made by one of the finest Port producers.
While Spain is known to produce some of the best value reds, a short ride down Spain's Duero River into the Douro Valley in Portugal brings you to the heart of a wine region that yields some of the best kept secrets in the wine industry.
This is our first featured Portuguese red wine and it more than deserves the accolade of Pick Of The Year. We've tasted many Portuguese reds, but we've never tasted one that was worthy of a feature. When I tasted the 2010 Douro by Churchill's, I was blown away at how elegant it was without being wimpy. The flavors were distinct yet subtle and the aromas were intoxicating.
This former Spectator Top 100 boasts intense red cherry aromas with hints of sweet basil and white pepper. An elegant combination of red fruits and well-integrated oak notes with lively acidity provide a vibrant palate and excellent backbone. Dried mint and herb notes are joined by wild plum flavors. Beautiful tannins offer elegance, structure and purity. This is not an over-extracted red; rather, it is a wonderfully balanced wine with finesse and class.
