A memorable trip to Tuscany made me a believer in fairy tales. The ambassador of that trip was the Fontodi winery. Recognized world-wide for their Super Tuscan, Flaccianello, it was the stellar 2012 Chianti that stole the show!
When people talk of Tuscany, they often conjure up images of a magical place where amazing food, wine and vistas collide. I can tell you first hand, it is all true! All the senses seem to come "alive" in this unique countryside that cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world.
I visited many wineries on this trip, but none warranted the "ambassador" title as did Fontodi. Located in the heart of Chianti Classico, just south of Panzano, the amphitheater shaped valleys come together to provide a unique micro-climate.
I sat with owner Giovanni Manetti and sampled the 2012's in his private tasting room overlooking his majestic amphitheater as he proudly described how the 2012's are showing beautiful purity, freshness, and depth.
I vividly recall the cedar notes emanating from the glass as I swished and swirled through his line-up. Walking through his property, I couldn't help but notice his attention to detail. His cellar was immaculate - you could eat off the floors.
All of Giovanni's efforts are evident in the bottle: organic and self-sustaining practices, and hand-picked grapes pressed the same day to preserve freshness. Here is what the wine showcases: Blackcherry, currant and violet flavors collide with rich, dark loam. Cedar and cigar-box frame a mineral driven core of bright red cherry notes. A long fresh finish reveals leather, tobacco and seamless tannins. The finish lasts and lasts and begs to be enjoyed with a mushroom risotto (truffles a bonus), margherita pizza (homemade please), and/or a pork chop glazed is aged balsamic vinegar.
Another amazing wine from this storybook setting was Fontodi's 2012 Flaccianello
, a captivating Super Tuscan, which is among the Super Tuscan elite such as Solaia, Le Pergole Torte, and Sassicaia.
While it's not exactly the same as being there, enjoying a glass of Fontodi is like experiencing this fairy tale setting in a glass. Enjoy!
