This is a rare treat indeed: Being able to enjoy a bottle of Outpost Zinfandel just in time for barbeque season. In fact, this may be our Zinfandel Pick Of The Season! Think Turley, Martinelli and Robert Biale when you think of Outpost Zinfandel. We've tried to feature this highly coveted and elusive Cali red for a few years, but with so little made, it has been difficult. Outpost's Howell Mountain Zinfandel - if and when you can get it - is often described as "sexy", "polished", and "wild". But that's the beauty of this Zin; it's multifaceted and offers something for everyone. An elaborate profile makes its hard to simply label as "good" or "luscious."
Although the wine receives rave reviews year after year, we are more focused on how the wine tastes. Let's just say this dynamic Zin will make the 2015 BBQ season one to remember. From an outstanding 2012 vintage, Outpost boasts bold aromas of blackberry cobbler and cracked pepper, which lead to rich, layered huckleberry and smoky meat flavors that finish with ripe, zesty tannins. Plum, crushed rock, sage, dark chocolate and raspberry are also found rolling around the palate. A touch of orange peel and toasty vanilla come out of nowhere. There is even a hint of spice on the long finish. Wow, what a wine.
We can't think of a better red to enjoy as we leave the cold behind us and look forward to a much needed BBQ season. Enjoy!
