Ornellaia's baby Super Tuscan is called "Le Volte." This particular vintage of Le Volte - the 2011 vintage - produced a rich and luscious wine. The plush fruit of this crop makes this particular bottling of Le Volte an outrageous bargain!
Each year Ornellaia produces four labels. Their flagship Super Tuscan, simply called "Ornellaia," sells for about $180 per bottle and is one of the premier Super Tuscans along with Sassicaia by Antinori.
What makes Le Volte such a treasure - besides it's quality and pedigree - is that some of the younger Cabernet and Merlot vines that go into "Le Volte" eventually make their way into their flagship Ornellaia.
Le Volte is a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine boasts dark berry aromas that flow through to a full palate with a touch of welcome spice. The Mediterranean influence on the Sangiovese combined with the Cabernet Sauvignon's structure and Merlot's softer notes create welcome accents of blueberry and dark cherry. It is "a gorgeous and silky smooth red wine that imparts bright tones of red cherry, blackberry, sweet spice and chocolate. The wine's youthful freshness and fruit-forward mouthfeel is ultimately what makes it such a pleasure to drink." The Wine Advocate
