This past Sunday was Oscar Night and I used it as the perfect excuse to make one of
my favorite comfort foods: homemade pizza with pomodoro sauce, fresh mozzarella, red onion, basil with drizzled pesto on top. Delicious!
However, the real award winner that night was the 2007 Calea Nero d'Avola from Sicily, Italy. As so eloquently described by Antonio Galloni of The Wine Advocate, the 2007 Calea is a "ridiculous value." I couldn't agree more. For less than $15 per bottle this fantastic Italian red can be your "go to" red for Sunday pizza, Tuesday pasta, Wednesday grilled meats or Friday "I just need to put my feet up and relax."
Nero d'Avola is Sicily’s best-known red grape and the 2007 Calea is a wonderful expression of that grape. Deeply colored and with a beguiling bouquet of violets, blueberry and black olives, this wine draws one in with its warm and generous nature. On the palate the texture is smooth and elegant, and the finish unfolds with considerable complexity, revealing nuances of mineral earth, ripe dark fruits, and hints of cedar.
Pair the Calea with your favorite dish any night of the week. It is truly a versatile wine that is a terrific value that drinks beyond its price. Enjoy!
