2013 Martinelli, "Giuseppe & Luisa" Zinfandel, Russian River Valley

This rare Zinfandel treat is as elusive as it is hedonistic. Stephen Tanzer calls this decadent red a "wild thing" and he couldn't be more accurate.
    With a cult-like following arguably more intense than Turley and Marcassin (and that says a lot), Martinelli's Giuseppe & Luisa Zinfandel is made by consulting winemaker Helen Turley. The vines are big, beautiful and gnarly, and the wine is the same. Worth every penny, this Zinfandel boasts aromas of plums, roasted meats, herbs and figs. This deep, dense, full-bodied effort is an exotic red with a high-pitched bouquet of cherry-cola, blackberry, and Moroccan spices. If you have the willpower to wait, let this wine breath in the glass for 30 minutes as this nuanced red becomes smokier with air, offering sweet black fruit compotes.
