"Perhaps you have not yet been bitten by the Chenin Blanc bug and transported to a world of luminous wines made in an astounding range of styles. If this is true,
then opportunity is about to pull the cork for you - Chenin Blanc wines offer so much pleasure and intrigue."Eric Asimov, NY Times Need an alternative to Chardonnay? Not yet ready for the intense lemon-lime flavors or Sauvignon Blanc? Have you dabbled with Riesling but not sure if you like the sweetness of that classic varietal? Then be prepared to be wowed by the unsung hero of the Loire Valley, Chenin Blanc. Certified organic in 2014, “Le Petit Cray” is a 50 year old plot of Chenin Blanc planted in soil of sandy clay and flint with limestone just beneath the surface. This terroir offers vibrant minerality and wonderful fruit notes and a markedly lighter expression of Chenin Blanc than that of Anjou or Savennieres. Mango, quince and lemon zest hints intermingle in a dry, smooth mouthfeel. Full on the palate, the fruit is more subdued than on the nose - apple and pear are complemented by lemon verbena and white minerals. The acidity is mild yet delivers a long, clean finish. Terrific with spicy Thai cuisine, seafood, sweet and sour dishes, or simply pour a glass alongside sheep-milk cheeses like Cypress Grove's Midnight Moon!
Le Petit Cray will make you a fan of this wonderfully versatile varietal that can easily be rotated though your Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay repertoire this Spring and Summer. Enjoy!
