Tucked away in the northern corner of Gevrey-Chambertin is Les Jeunes Rois, a single vineyard Gevry that represents one of the most amazing values in Burgundy and a literal diamond in the rough.
Simple delineation on a map precludes Les Jeunes Rois from being designated a Premier Cru vineyard, however, you wouldn't know it from the wine.
Les Jeunes Rois is located just past a series of Premier Cru vineyards and boasts the same terroir as its Premier Cru neighbors. And, Domaine Tortochot owns mostly Premier Cru and Grand Cru holdings in Gevrey-Chambertin, which says a lot about the fruit quality of this particular single vineyard. Hand harvested and using only the best Pinot Noir grapes from the vineyard, the wine exudes pretty red currant, rose petal and wild raspberry notes. Pure and ripe but not extracted, the wine is wonderfully balanced with earth and mineral notes. Energetic and precise with an impressive finish, this is a "pretty" Gevrey with a delightful fruity mouthfeel and classic dry tannins on the finish. Enjoy now and over the next five years. The fact that it is certified organic is a bonus. The fact that a mere 250 cases are made for worldwide consumption is a shame.
