It's four years since we featured a Gigondas, a region that offers Rhone lovers exceptional value.
Today's feature, the 2016 Domaine Gour de Chaule Gigondas "Cuvee Tradition," is textbook Gigondas; it is the best value in the Rhone.
Classically made, the grapes are not destemmed during maceration, which imparts a wonderful, rustic mouthfeel buttressed by dark fruit notes.
The wine is long on the finish, rich with texture, and simply delicious. By the way, it also happens to be organic.
"A highly perfumed, expressive bouquet evokes ripe red berries, exotic spices and potpourri, and a smoky mineral nuance adds lift and urgency. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering concentrated raspberry liqueur, spicecake and lavender pastille flavors that spread out steadily with air... extremely long and smooth, with fine-grained tannins making a late appearance." It's so good, we also have it available in magnums (1.5L), here.
From soups to stews to cheese, or simply by the fire, this gorgeous Gigondas will best most $75 Chateauneufs.
Enjoy!
