“96+ Barolo • Run don't walk!!!”

"A stunning, brilliant vintage." Vinous

By David Gettenberg

There Will Be Others, But Not Like This!

First we featured the 2016 Gaja Barbaresco. Then, the 2016 Cavallotto Barolo. Today, we're thrilled to showcase the 2016 Domenico Clerico to round out our third Nebbiolo feature from this "stunning, brilliant" vintage.

Each offer readers different - and fantastic - expressions of Nebbiolo. Wild cherry, dried spice, and cedar give way to intoxicating truffle aromas.

On the palate, similar flavors return with cherry, eucalyptus, espresso, and burnt earth. Fine, dusty tannins cleanse the palate and offer wonderful grip. We may be featuring other Barolo and Barbaresco from 2016 vintage, but few will rival the value of this beautiful Nebbiolo.

It is big and round, but retains so much of the rustic Piedmont charm. One of the best vintages since 2010, Domenico Clerico has holdings in some of the region's most esteemed crus, including Ginestra and Mosconi.

This beautiful Barolo is a blend of Nebbiolo from these prized single vineyards.

A classic!

Press & Tasting Notes

“Plums, cured meat and white truffles.”

James Suckling • 95 / 100

"Plums, cured meat and white truffles. Pretty aromas. Full-bodied with chewy, ripe tannins and a long, flavorful finish. It’s very structured with lots of ripe tannins and ripe fruit that envelop the phenolics. Solid and real. Give it time to soften and come together."

“A panoramic view of the Nebbiolo grape all in bright technicolor.”

Wine Advocate • 94+ / 100

"The classic 2016 Barolo by Domenico Clerico is a generous and full wine that offers a panoramic view of the Nebbiolo grape all in bright technicolor and with the appropriate intensity. The wine's all-encompassing approach brings many details into focus, including wild cherry, spice, leather and ferrous soil. Fruit is exclusively from Monforte d'Alba, with some from the lower parts of Pajana and Per Cristina and some from the younger vines planted in Ciabot Mentin. This is an elegant expression with the mild oak signature that is an important part of the Clerico playlist. Camphor ash and burnt embers lift lightly as the wine opens in the glass. It ages in barrique for eight months, followed by another year in larger oak casks."
