The most common question we get for California wine is, "What is the best Cabernet in the $50 - $75 range?"
The answer? Mad Hatter!
The last name Beckstoffer may sound familiar. Andy Beckstoffer owns Beckstoffer Vineyards, the largest grower of premium California grapes that sells to notable wineries such as Stag's Leap, Schrader, Realm, and Paul Hobbs.
His son, Tuck Beckstoffer, with access to some of the most coveted grapes in California, makes one of the best-kept Napa secrets, Mad Hatter.
Wild raspberry, black plum, crushed red cherry, and warm cassis fill the glass with notes of roasted espresso bean, tobacco leaf, and baking spice. Sweet chewy tannins frame the lush fruit. A hint of pepper on the long finish reveals secondary notes of tilled earth and cocoa. A multi-layered wine, each of the Bordeaux varietals plays nicely in this well-integrated, proprietary red.
Jeb Dunnuck has called Mad Hatter "pure Napa Valley goodness."
Made from mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, the balance of the 2018 Mad Hatter is Merlot, Petit Sirah, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The Merlot adds silky, lush dark plum and the Cabernet Sauvignon adds terrific texture and grip. The Petit Sirah adds wonderful toasty, roasted notes.
After one sip, you'll taste why this delicious blend is one of the best-kept secrets in Napa!
