“Hot Off The Press • GAJA Barbaresco • "Best Wines Of 2021"”

For Gaja Fans And Collectors, A Windfall!

By David Gettenberg

Wine Enthusiast just awarded one of our favorite Italian reds (the 2018 Gaja Barbaresco) among its "Best Of The Year" in their December 2021 issue.

If you recall, we featured this Gaja beauty last September, calling it "a windfall wine."  Only once or twice in the past few decades has Gaja declassified their single-vineyard crus into the estate's normale Barbaresco (this wine).

That means Gaja's most collectible Barbarescos, Sori Tilden and Sori San Lorenzo, which fetch $500 per bottle, are declassified into this Nebbiolo windfall.

Late hail impacted much of the region - but it didn't impact the quality!  Rather than make even fewer single vineyard cuvees, the Gaja family only made a premium Barbaresco in 2018.

This is a great opportunity for readers as this release may prove to be one of the most collectible Gaja Barbarescos.

"For the 2018 vintage, there will be no single cru bottlings for Barbaresco, and all of the fruit has gone into the estate bottling. The 2018 Barbaresco is pure and inviting, with perfumed notes of rose petal, ripe raspberry, and clove. Medium-bodied and approachable, with super fine-grained tannins, it offers fresh strawberry, orange pith, and dusty earth. The undeniable elegance of this 2018 is joyful now, though it will be great to revisit over the next 15 years."  Jeb Dunnuck

If you've ever wanted an inkling of what $500 Nebbiolo tastes like, here is your chance.  Even though the 2018 Gaja Barbaresco contains its traditional estate Nebbiolo, the single-vineyard influence is palpable.

If you are new to Gaja, this is the vintage to begin your journey - you will realize it is worth every penny.

As always, these wines are gorgeous today.  But, if you can wait a few years, you will look back in awe and be thrilled that you added this trophy to your collection.

Enjoy!

Best Of The Year 2021

“Absolutely bright and pristine quality of fruit.”

Wine Advocate

"The Gaja 2018 Barbaresco is a wine of grace and purpose, with an elegant bouquet and a more powerful palate presence. These recent releases from the venerated house of Gaja are some of the most transparent and honest expressions to be found anywhere in the Langa. Some of the flashiness we saw in the past is today replaced by subtle Nebbiolo nuances and finesse, with crushed flowers, coriander, wild berry, smoke, tar and candied orange peel. This shift in character runs parallel to the slow and careful management transition from an older generation to a younger one. This 2018 vintage comes alive in the mouth, thanks to its balanced acidity and the absolutely bright and pristine quality of fruit delivered with such care.”

“Undeniable elegance.”

Jeb Dunnuck

"The hallmark of the Gaja estate, the Barbaresco is sourced from 14 vineyards within Barbaresco and Treiso. For the 2018 vintage, there will be no single cru bottlings for Barbaresco, and all of the fruit has gone into the estate bottling. The 2018 Barbaresco is pure and inviting, with perfumed notes of rose petal, ripe raspberry, and clove. Medium-bodied and approachable, with super fine-grained tannins, it offers fresh strawberry, orange pith, and dusty earth. The undeniable elegance of this 2018 is joyful now, though it will be great to revisit over the next 15 years. Drink 2022-2036."
