Few sub-$50 California reds wow us like Leviathan. If you could only have one, Leviathan would be it. It is "one of the best values out of California." Antonio Galloni
It is the personal project of Andy Erickson, Screaming Eagle's former winemaker.
Screaming Eagle, at $2,000 per bottle, may be one of the most elusive and collectible domestic California Cabernets. Erickson knows this and has created Leviathan, often referred to as "Baby Eagle." It is his personal project - a wine of superior quality and accessibility for immediate enjoyment.
For years, we have been a fan of the plush fruit of Leviathan, which offers approachability in its youth without sacrificing balance, structure, or depth.
Leviathan is a hedonistic red. Rich black currant, dark cherry, crème brulee, cigar box, dried herbs, and dark cacao. A full-bodied orchestration of flavors collides on a long finish. Notes of currants, chocolate, spice box, and earthy, herbal notes all emerge seamlessly. Rich, ripe tannins follow you on the long, outrageous finish.
Leviathan is one of our best sellers and a perennial meritage favorite. It is a proprietary blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance Merlot, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Franc.
This flamboyant red is one of the best values from California, which is why Jeb Dunnuck has called Leviathan a "smoking good value."
Be sure to get your hands on some. We even have rare magnums, here.
Enjoy!
"Very pure fruit this year with ripe raspberries and fresh currants throughout. Full-to medium-bodied with soft, polished tannins and bright, clean fruit. It’s really balanced and the finish makes you want to drink it. Subtle and vivid fruit at the end. Yet, it can improve with age. Blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot and petite verdot. Drink or hold."
"Always a value, the 2019 California Red Wine is a juicy, up-front, undeniably delicious red with plenty of red, black, and blue fruits as well as graphite, leafy herbs, and chalky mineral nuances. Medium to full-bodied, pure, balanced, and seamless, it's a no-brainer purchase to enjoy over the coming 8-10 years at a minimum. "
"The 2019 Leviathan is a fabulous wine from Andy Erickson. Powerful and flamboyant, but somehow not overdone, the 2019 is packed with inky dark red fruit. Blood orange, spice and floral accents add just enough lift to keep things balanced. I very much like the energy here. Best after 2021."
