Tuscan Treasure • 97 pts • If you could only drink one Italian white

August 09, 2021

A gorgeous golden hue frames this wonderful Italian white from Montenidoli, which sits high on the mountains of San Gimignano.  It is literally and figuratively head and shoulders above other estates in the region.

Firm and salty cheese?  Certainly.

Capellini tossed with garlic, olive oil, and sautéed mushrooms?  Now you are speaking my language!

This classic Vernaccia has the stuffing to dress it up or down.  It has "staying power and an unmistakeable tang.”  Decanter

Apple, pear, and white flower notes marry with crunchy, rocky minerality from Montenidoli, which is one of the few estates in the area with sought after limestone soil.  Mineral-driven texture lends itself to golden fruit and a depth that will pair with your favorite pasta and lean meat dishes.

How Is This Wine Not More Expensive?

We love this Tuscan white for its texture and richness without overwhelming the palate and maintaining its fruit and acidity balance.

You will ask yourself as we did, "How is this wine not more expensive?"

Do not over-chill before serving.  As we have said before with well-made whites, serve on the warmer side of cold to allow the acidity and aromatics to come to life in your glass.

Stock up!  The importer did not bring in much; it is a fantastic white that can be enjoyed all year round with a wide variety of cuisine.  Last night I enjoyed it with homemade chicken milanese topped with fresh arugula, sautéed tomatoes, and aged balsamic.  It was fantastic!!

Repeat- stock up!

Cheers!

Hot Off The Press • Decanter Gets It Right

"Deeply textured yellow fruit with staying power and an unmistakeable tang."

Decanter • 97/100

"The Vernaccia grape has been documented in San Gimignano since 1276, while the Montenidoli estate appeared in a 1404 will. Elisabetta Fagiuoli and her late husband, Sergio Muratori planted the then abandoned Montenidoli with vines from 1965. Red grapes are grown on Triassic clays (very rare in Tuscany), the Vernaccia on younger, well drained calcareous ground. The Vernaccia is made like a red, a waning local tradition, with short skin contact before pressing and fermenting leaving deeply textured yellow fruit with staying power and an unmistakeable tang. Drink 2021-2035."
