The 2020 Sea Sun by Chuck Wagner, Chardonnay California was a Merchant's Pick
Caymus Owner, Chuck Wagner, Makes A Shockingly Good Cali Chardonnay For Everyday
May 06, 2022
Two years ago we first tasted Sea Sun; we thought it was going to be another big-buttery Cali Chardonnay.
We've seen our share of over-the-top Cali Chards that seem to have too much butter and not enough balance.
The domestic, sub-$25 Chardonnay category is tough; the wines tend to be diluted, blended, and over-oaked to the point that none of the fruit nuance remains.
This everyday Chardonnay is different!
Tons of refreshing acidity. Loads of red and green apple and lemon zest. The oak is mild- so mild in fact that it comes off as creamy, not buttery. Honeysuckle and white flower on entry are followed by roasted nut and grilled mango. Spring meadow aromas lead to hints of smoky, brown spice. A final kick of acidity pulls you in for another sip.
If you like a balanced Chardonnay with a hint of butter, this is your wine. If you like a creamy Chardonnay with vibrant acidity that cleanses your palate, this too is your wine.
Sea Sun can be enjoyed by itself and with food. On its own, the acidity really brings the wine to life. With food, notes of grilled mango and roasted nut emerge.
Quite nice and a very compelling price, this is a pantry essential for Cali Chard fans!
Enjoy!
