Alain Verset, Cornas

Savoring Syrah from Rhone Royalty!

If you are not already crazy for Cornas, today's Syrah offering from one of the region's most esteemed producers, Alain Verset, is going to change your mind.

Located just south of Saint-Joseph, Cornas enjoys the reputation of producing classic and powerful reds.

Steep, terraced granite and limestone slopes are responsible for the intricacy of this Cornas, which also undergoes whole-cluster pressing and fermentation in concrete to retain its robust tannins.

Virtual royalty in Cornas, the Verset Family put the region on the wine-making map following WWII. Rich and round on the palate, this wine opens with a swirl of raspberry and blackberry fruits, complemented by olives, herbs, wild flowers and licorice with a delightfully long finish. We enjoyed this wine with seasonal ratatouille, but it would be lovely alongside herbed-rubbed pork roast or a juicy steak.

Delicious and ready to drink now, Syrah comes from may parts of the world, but none has Cornas character.

$39.95 per bottle / $479.40 per case

Precise and elegant, the 2012 Cornas presents evolved black and blue fruits, iron, crushed rock, olive and bay leaf on the nose and is medium to full-bodied, fresh, focused and nicely structured on the palate. The wine has beautiful purity of fruit, good acidity and fine tannin.  Delicious now or drink over the following 10-12 years.
