The sweltering heat of the summer has reared its head. With this warmer weather comes the desire to enjoy lighter, brighter wines. We can think of no better wine to quench the summer heat than a Gavi.
Piedmont may be known for such hearty reds as Barolo and Barbaresco; however, among this sea of big Piedmontese reds is a small sub-region called Gavi, which produces quite elegant and refreshing whites.
One of our favorites is the Masera Gavi by Stefano Massone, a wine that has exceptional value. Stefano is known for pruning and limiting his yields to ensure his wine is not overproduced or diluted.
These low yields and careful winemaking give this particular Gavi its intensity. Made from 100% Cortese grapes, this delicious white is both soft and crisp. With a pleasant stony backbone, this wine features notes of green apple, pear and a lovely, enlivening finish of white flower and white pepper.
This is an exceptional value in any season, especially the spring and summer months. Enjoy with fish, cheese, salads and light pasta dishes with a dash of olive oil. This bright Italian white is a terrific "go to" white throughout the entire year, especially now.
