You may have heard the terms: "Baby Brunello" or "Brunello's Little Brother."
No matter the vernacular, calling this wine a "Baby Brunello" or something other than a Brunello does not do it justice.
This Rosso is ALL BRUNELLO without the wait.
Using the same estate Sangiovese, a little less time in oak and bottle before release is all that stands between Valdicava's Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino bottle designations (the former requiring more time before release).
And, while most Rossos use the estate's younger vines, Valdicava does not. You will not find a better value Rosso di Montalcino, especially in this vintage.
With an outstanding 2016 growing season - one in which the producers agree the stars aligned - this Rosso bests most Brunellos in any vintage.
Porcini aromas, bright cherry, sweet spice, floral notes, dried flower, and strawberry are supported by hearty yet balanced tannins. Aromas of fresh saddle leather, eucalyptus, tobacco leaf and raspberry.
Forget that Valdicava is one of the top five Brunello producers in Montalcino. Forget that the grapes are grown biodynamically. These are niceties that only reinforce this amazing wine.
Not all Rosso di Montalcino's are created equal.
Enjoy this tremendous value now... but keep in mind, it has the pedigree to be put down for several years.
