Gaja, Ca' Marcanda Magari
This is the newly released and best ever Gaja Ca' Marcanda Magari that we have ever tasted. This sensational Super Tuscan is from the prized 2015 vintage, a vintage which is producing fantastic wines in Tuscany and across Europe (including Bordeaux and Burgundy).
As in years past, we only get one shot at this wine each September for a very short period. So little is made, even less released. Inventory of Gaja's Magari Super Tuscan goes as quickly as it arrives.
Wine Spectator has anointed Gaja wines "the finest Italian wines ever made." The 2015 is an intoxicating blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Made famous for his Piedmont Barbarescos, Angelo Gaja is one of the premier Italian wine producers.
If you are Gaja fan, you already know about the Magari mystic. If you are Super Tuscan fan, you shouldn't hold back on this release.
I happen to enjoy this wine with tenderloin seasoned with thyme, rosemary, salt and pepper. That's because the Gaja Magari possesses striking notes of mocha, tar, herbs, smoke, black cherries, earth and sweet French oak, which come alive with grilled and roasted meat. Roasty aromas of coffee and beautifully integrated barrel spice and fruit will fill your glass.
The wine is powerful, expansive and breathtakingly balanced. It is a rich, well-rounded wine with an elegant, classically Tuscan silky finish.
Whether familiar with Magari or not, please make sure you are one of the few that gets to enjoy it this year.
THE MERCHANT'S MARK
95 / 100
This may be Gaja's best Ca' Marcanda Magari ever. Aromas of wild flowers, dried spices and figs with notes of fresh berries. Round and caressing tannins lead to roasted aromas of cherry, plum, and dark coffee. Peaty earth and balsamic notes end with refreshing cedar notes. A seamless blend of flavors and textures, this wonderful wine ends with an extremely long finish.
