2015 Giodo, Rosso Toscana

Montalcino's Best Kept Secret

Quietly arriving on the scene five years ago, Giodo owner, Carlo Ferrini, was recently hailed by Wine Spectator as "one of Montalcino's great winemakers," and his wines, "one of Montalicino's best kept secrets."

As the former winemaker of Casanova di Neri as well as clients Ricasoli and Telenti, Carlo keeps his vineyard location private as not to upstage his high-profile clients. (With his accolades, we'll see how long that lasts!)

Within the iconic 2015 Tuscan vintage, we are constantly looking for standouts, especially as the 2015 Brunelli start rolling in over the next few weeks.

Here's why Giodo is on our list of 2015 standouts:

Giodo uses the same fruit in this Rosso Toscana as in their flagship Brunello (at $175 per bottle). Again, the exact same fruit. The only difference? This Rosso sees a bit less time in wood before release (and thus cannot officially take the "Brunello" designation).

But boy does this Sangiovese pack a similar punch as its big brother!

An intense burst of cherry and rose petal fill the glass. A hint of earth leads to a procession of spice, dark berry and power. Balanced and structured, its brilliant fruit offers an amazing experience for early consumption.

Extremely limited.

$48.95 per bottle / $587.40 per case

97 / 100

"This is a linear and dense red with blackberry, black cherry and floral aromas and flavors. Full body, tight and powerful. This is so focused and long. I love the fresh acidity and solid, fruit-coated tannins. A new wine from Carlo Ferrini's tiny Brunello estate."
